Social history has always fascinated me - so during my time as Chairman of the Shaftesbury Gold Hill Museum, I developed my interest in the Dorset Button industry. Over the years I’ve also worked with textiles, so creating Dorset Buttons was an ideal way to combine both these interests.
To help keep this heritage craft alive, my work uses the traditional Dorset Button for inspiration. I also work in the traditional way whilst using contemporary materials and designs. All my work is based around a ring and includes wall art using fabric, ribbons, lace and yarn as well as small yarn and fabric jewellery pieces and accessories.
My buttons have a variety of uses: and I have had commissions for film work, including the recent “Far From the Madding Crowd” starring Carey Mulligan and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil starring Angelina Jolie. To provide authenticity to period costumes, I work with Living History Groups, including Hampton Court Palace where my work included making buttons for the re-enactors from the Georgian Chocolate Kitchen. I have also designed buttons for fashion designers.
I take individual commissions: each piece will be inspired by the local Dorset Button.
