his is a joyful never-ending journey: “As long as I can paint, I am on the Path to understanding what ‘it’ is all about.” (P Wolff)
Having spent my childhood and much of my teaching career in our beautiful West Country, it still inspires much of my artwork. After experimenting with techniques and mediums I have developed my own style and am now known as as a Dorset Colourist, combining design and pattern with poetry, mythology and world symbolism. Working from my inner landscape of “emotion recollected in tranquility,” I create vibrant, stylised, symbolic artwork from images filtered through memory and imagination. These images “nag” at me until I begin painting them, nudging me into examining something I don’t quite understand - but need to. As such, each new painting is a journey into the unknown. Deeply-felt life-experiences are echoed in real and imagined other Worlds. As I paint, the initial meanings, stories and images evolve and deepen with a life of their own. Often suggesting allegorical, timeless events, my paintings capture a sense of place and/or spirituality. My themes continue to be Redemptive Light - for Light will always overcome Darkness. Inspired by the illustrative style of artists such as iconic William Blake, Post-Impressionist artists Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis, and Edouard Vuillard (‘Les Nabis’ or ‘The Prophets’), Richard Tuff and Nelly Tsenova, I paint inner and outer landscapes in vibrant colour. I have also had a lifelong fascination with the History of Mark-Making, so iconic visual symbols from ancient writing systems as well as an original Pictographic alphabet can be found in my work. I have participated in many local Craft Fairs; Dorset Arts Weeks; the Child Okeford Art Trails - and also continue to exhibit and sell in various local venues. Since 2015, I have been part of the Art Co-operative known as The Cygnet Gallery in Swans Yard, Shaftesbury. www.thedorsetretreat.co.uk cali@thedorsetretreat.co.uk 01258 821183 |
