As I travel the world, relishing each opportunity to see different places, meet interesting people and experience a variety of wonderful new cultures, I am always reminded of a simple quotation by Alfred Eisenstaedt [1898-1995] an American photographer and photojournalist with a non-judgemental yet acutely perceptive eye. He said...
‘It is more important to click with people than to click the shutter.’ This I firmly believe and if ever I have been met with cautious indifference, it is because I have been too anxious to get the shot, too quick to press the shutter, rather than experience the moment and gain the trust of those around me. To all those I have met during my adventures, every one of you has made a lasting impression on me. I will never forget one young student in the New Forest, who when asked if I could see his images remarked… ‘Not now, come on, this is fun, let’s not waste time’. How right he was! I once spent a few days with Faye Godwin [1931-2005] an outstanding British landscape photographer, who said that she quite liked some of my images, ‘But remember one thing Philip, always look behind you, as that is where the photograph may be hiding.’ Valuable lessons learnt from both young and not so young. So, when all seems lost and nothing is going right, don’t despair, just step back, put down your camera, look around you and enjoy the now. All will be well, trust me, for tomorrow is another day. Come into the Cygnet gallery, I would love to meet you and perhaps share some of your images. Email: philip.galvan@thestrollingphotographer.com |
