Jewellery
I design and hand-make silver jewellery, decorative boxes and other small pieces in my north Dorset workshop. Every piece is unique and the silver is hallmarked (as required by the Hallmarking Act 1973). I use mainly recycled silver and fairly traded, traceable, ethically sourced stones.
When designing, my influences are mainly nature – patterns and textures, as well as mid-century Scandinavian design, clean and simple looking, designers such as Georg Jensen, Elis Kauppi and David Anderson. My pieces are fairly simple in shape. I use a lot of semi-precious stones such as agates and jaspers, as well as precious gems and fossils including dinosaur bone, ammonites and trilobites. There are many different ways to texture the silver and produce interesting surfaces; hammering, rolling and melting (reticulation) which are some of the processes I use in my work. I love experimenting, for example casting coffee beans for ear studs and making pea pod ear drops by folding and hammering the shape – called fold forming. All in all, I love the fact that I can think up a design and make it. I may have to make tools and formers for shapes, but what fun I have. I also undertake commissions. I take pleasure in designing and making pieces that are personal and precious. I love to think people all over the world enjoy wearing my work.
